A message from Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer, GPC England Chair on Thursday 28th March 2024
We have overwhelmingly voted to reject the Government and NHS England’s 2024/25 GP contract changes. More than 19,000 GPs and GP registrars took part in the BMA’s referendum, with over 99% voting ‘no’.
Thousands of you have spoken, and we have sent a strong, solid message to the Government.
These results confirm what we have been hearing from members for some time; that general practice is not being given the resource it needs to provide our communities the care they deserve.
We are now facing our third contract imposition on 1 April. The Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England national practice contract baseline funding uplift of 1.9% (£179m), well below inflationary investment erosion in recent years, is nowhere near enough for us to keep on top of rising costs of running a practice and delivering safe patient care over the next six to 12 months. On top of that, the Government’s refusal to include GPs in existing funding, that can only be used to hire non-GP staff, will make it harder to hire more doctors in general practice.
GPC England meets today to discuss the profession’s possible next steps. The time has come to bring about change.
