Balint Group

Feeling burnt out? Ever wondereed how to cope with those heart sink patients? Here is the answer!

I am a recently retired GP starting a Balint group on Teesside for general practitioners with the backing of GP Health.

Michael Balint was a psychotherapist who was interested in the relationship between doctor and their patients and particularly in the inconscious communications. Balint groups allow doctors to bring difficult, distressing or challenging encounters with patients to a group and allow the group to explore the difficulties and allow the doctor to gain insight and move forward in their therapeutic relationship with the patient. No preparation of cases is required just a recollection of events and a desire to contribute and think about the doctor, the patient and their illness.

The Group will meet on a Monday evening on a monthly basis and will consist of fellow GPs, myself and a co-leader Dr Zara Fantarrow - clinical psychologist.
